Prof. B. S. Chavan: A Legacy

Prof. Bir Singh Chavan (1961–2020) was an influential psychiatrist and visionary leader whose work transformed mental health services in India, particularly in community and rehabilitation psychiatry. Educated at GMCH Rohtak and PGIMER Chandigarh, Prof. Chavan held key academic and administrative positions, including Director Principal of GMCH Chandigarh, Head of Psychiatry and Human Genetics, and leadership roles at institutions like GRIID and the Mental Health Institute.

Throughout his career, Prof. Chavan exhibited unwavering dedication, even working through cancer until his final days. He spearheaded numerous initiatives: community outreach for substance abuse, suicide prevention helpline, genetic screening programs, homes for homeless mentally ill, innovative vocational projects for the intellectually challenged, and the establishment of centers for disability assessment, rehabilitation, and excellence in mental health training.

A recipient of the Presidential Award (2003) for his groundbreaking work in disability employment, Prof. Chavan was also deeply committed to teaching, research, and professional leadership. He served as Secretary General and President-Elect for the Indian Association for Social Psychiatry, leaving the organization at new heights.

Warm, energetic, and deeply compassionate, Prof. Chavan touched countless lives—he embraced pain as fuel for service and progress, lifting others along the way.
